Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
